The Umi No Tamagotchi (aka Umino, Tamagotchi Ocean) is a Tamagotchi that simulates an ocean creature. It was released in Japan in March of 1998. It was released internationally a little later as the Tamagotchi Ocean in English. The English versions are highly sought after, and go for $300 or more. It was released in four shell designs in Japan, and four international designs.

The Umino is considered the most difficult to play Tamagotchi ever released. It dies easily, and the random attacks feature makes the gameplay even more difficult. One of the newer features exclusive to the Umino is water quality, which has an effect on which character evolves on the pet. It also has a motion sensor similar to the Angel, Morino, and TamaOtch.

Food
The food menu allows you to feed your fish. The meal will fill one hungry heart. The snack will fill one happy heart.

Game
The game icon will let you play a game with your umino. This is a simple guessing game, where you will choose which treasure chest has the treasure in it. It is completely by chance. There is no trick to it. You will need to guess correctly at least 3 out of 5 times to win. Occassionally, you will come across the octopus. This is pretty frustrating for players, as it will ink your umino, and destroy your water quality. You will need to use the cleanup icon to clean the water. It ends the game as well as empties all of your umino's happy hearts.

Cleanup
Use this icon to clean your fish's water. This will improve the water quality meter.

Discipline
Sometimes, your fish will misbehave. Use this icon to discipline it, and raise training.

Medicine
Your fish can often become sick. Use this icon to give it medicine and cure it. This can take multiple doses.

Light
Your umino will need you to turn out the light when it goes to bed. Use this option to turn the light off. The light will automatically turn on when it wakes up.

Attention
When your umino needs something, it will call for you, and this icon will light up.

Attacks
Your Umino will randomly be attacked by a polar bear. These attacks are sporadic. When the attack starts, you will need to scare the bear away similar to the Morino foot and frog. To scare the bear away, press the B button, then tap the umino's case until you hear the success beep that it has registered your tap.

Set clock
Hit the B button on the character screen to go to the clock screen. Press the A and C button simultaneously to enter the set time mode. Use the A button to set the hour, and the B button to set the minutes. Press C when you have entered the correct time. Press B to go back to the character screen.

Mute Sound
On the character screen, press the A and C buttons simultaneously. Press again the turn the sound back on.

Tips & Tricks

  • It is possible to never feed your umino. Many have tested this theory, and while difficult, it shows your umino does not die from hunger or unhappiness.
  • The bear can appear as often as every 50 minutes. He may skip one of these attacks, but you can use this to gauge when you might be in danger.
